The launch of a season

Standard

I believe that the Formula One season begins with coverage in the media. The build up is just as important as the races, as it increases the atmosphere and excitement to every session. This year was no different, or maybe better as the Sky Sports F1 HD channel was officially launched at eight o’clock this evening with a special introduction program. With two well known voices from Formula 1 commentary, Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz are joined by Damon Hill, Anthony Davidson, Natalie Pinkham, Steve Rider, Georgie Thompson, Simon Lazenby and David Croft.

Over much talk over the winter break over coverage, this was going to be the first test for Sky, to show it’s viewers what they have to offer. Whether paying out for the service really will be better than the previous BBC Sports coverage.

During the program, the new team changes were made clear as well as new rules and technicalities to the cars. With Vettel’s 2011 winning Red Bull car in the studio, and a CGI of the new models, you can see clearly how the rear exhaust has changed – one of the most talked about changes this season.

The program also had interviews with Red Bull’s Mark Webber, and McLauren’s Jensen Button – as well as following the Mercedes Benz team. Martin Brundle spent a track day with Force India’s Paul di Resta as he takes his new 2012 car for a test.

We saw an insight into the season ahead, without any disappointment in the quality of it too. With fantastic images in high definition, you can’t go wrong. This is going to be a very competitive year, more so than previously. The stakes are higher, and the pressure is mounding on the teams to show better results. You will not want to miss anything, and you won’t miss a detail with Sky.

The wait is almost over

Standard

In just a couple of weeks, the first Formula 1 race of the 2012 season will begin with 58 laps of Melbourne. With the controversy over the coverage, many fans have been waiting anxiously to see their new channel appear on the Sky listings. As advertised, the channel will be officially launched on Friday 9th March, with a special program starting at 8pm. In the meantime, look up channel 408 and there you go. With a small preview of what Sky has to offer in a looped video, you are watching the Sky Sports Formula One HD channel.

Of course, once the launch program has finished, there will be plenty of programs throughout the week with news and interviews included. I’m sure that throughout the week building up to Melbourne, we will see footage of the testing sessions that have been going on since the new year. For those who haven’t followed the out-of-season updates, here are just a few to keep you in the know.

  • All of the new cars have been unveiled.
  • Jerez day 1 – Raikkonen leads for Lotus.
  • Jerez day 2- Schumacher leads with his Mercedes 2011 car.

Motorsport Illustrated, ready for the new season

In time for the 2012 season, I will be contributing to the website Motorsport Illustrated. While the site will offer news and updates on all motorsport, I will be concentrating on race weekend reviews for Formula 1.

The articles will appear on both the Motorsport Illustrated website, and also in this blog.

You can find out more about my contributions to the website through the projects menu at the top of the page.

Take a look at the Formula 1 season up ahead…

Standard

I must admit that the only sport I am interested in, is Formula One. Football, rugby, golf and tennis do nothing for me, if it’s not fast and dangerous, I don’t care.

This up and coming season of the motor-sport has seen some drastic changes, which some could argue are rather complicated.

NOTABLE CHANGES:

Firstly, I am going to talk about the coverage. In previous years, BBC Sports has covered the qualifying and race sessions live on BBC 1, with extra footage online and via the red button. This year, Sky Sports have taken over and will see the grand prix until at least 2018. Unlike the BBC, Sky have a set channel dedicated to the sport which will show all practice and qualifying sessions, as well as the race itself. On 9th March 2012, we will see ‘Sky Sports F1′ launch through subscribers to the HD pack, or Sky Sports 1 & 2. The first event is held only a few days later on the 16th, the first practice session for the Melbourne Grand Prix in Australia. More information on the coverage by Sky Sports can be found here.

Secondly, there has been small confusion with various name changes to the teams. A full run-down of teams and drivers can be found at the end of this article, but here are the main changes.

- Team Lotus >> Caterham F1 Team

- Lotus Renault GP >> Lotus F1 Team

- Virgin Racing >> Marussia F1 Team

Finally, some of the regulations have changed. Some of these might not mean anything to you, but for the Formula 1 ‘know alls’, it’ll change loads. For the safety of the drivers, crash tests are being toughened, especially for side impacts. Every car is now required to pass FIA tests before any on-track testing. If the safety car is used during a race, any car that has been lapped will be allowed to catch up with the back of the grid so that there is a clean restart without any slower cars in front of the leading drivers.  Drivers will not be allowed to return to the racing line on the track after moving off it to defend their position.

There has previously been no in-season testing, however there will be a three day testing session during the season.

Technical regulations;

- There will be no blown diffusers, so designers will not be allowed to position the exhaust so that they can use exhaust gases to boost the cars aerodynamics.

- All tyres that are allocated to each driver must all be used on the first day of practice.

- The FIA have imposed a restriction on the height of the nose section of the cars to reduce the chance of it entering the cockpit of another car during a collision. This has led to odd looking designs and cars which look out of place…
