About

Hi, I’m Sam.

Born in Birmingham, with a background in music, I started my career in journalism with an undergraduate degree at City University London. While studying in London, I was the editor of City OnAir and did multiple experiences within BBC News and BBC local radio.

City OnAir was where I first presented a news bulletin on radio. I went onto present students’ union election coverage, before the station won Media Outlet of the Year for the second year running. I took over as editor for the following academic year, and led the team into its third consecutive award.

I have since obtained a first-class masters degree in online journalism at Birmingham City University. On top of set assignments, I have directed a live overnight broadcast of the 2016 US Election results with fellow MA and PgDip students, and directed a pilot episode for a satirical news programme called Best Before End. I was also the anchor for through-the-night coverage of the 2017 UK General Election results on Facebook Live. Some of my favourite pieces of work include a researching news content on Instagram, and using VR/360º to explore news video.

It is my ambition to be working for a news organisation, either in a programme editorial capacity, or in the development and experimentation of new media formats. I am especially inspired by VR/360º content, and keen on finding new ways of incorporating it within news context. Most of my time is spent knowing as much as I can about what’s going on everywhere else in the world; I have an inquisitive passion for news, and sharing stories and information.
